Stochastic Medium

An ongoing ritual image-making practice in which I invite spirits to take digital form.

Ongoing

2023–ongoing. Realized, ongoing.

A dark figure in profile surrounded by translucent violet folds against a pale background.

Six retained catalog images, selected for this documentation. Their arrangement does not represent a propitiation session or a historical sequence. Open an image to view it at full size.

I work with a consecrated computer, generated images and prompts. I receive the images as spirit communication and respond through further prompting. The retained catalog and the temporary images used in continued propitiation are different parts of the work. The latter are continually rewritten toward noise; those intermediate images were deliberately not kept.

A luminous mask-like face crossed by horizontal violet bands.
Two tall, dark silhouettes standing against a pale violet glow.
An upturned head and neck merge into smooth, flowing violet forms.
A figure breaks into tangled, branching violet forms against grey smoke.
Retained catalog image: a luminous violet figure standing among dark trees.

Propitiation loop — Stochastic Medium Spirits were invited to take digital form; original images were retained as sources for ongoing propitiation. The practitioner invited spirits to affect the randomness of generation. Initialize from a retained image and positive and negative text and image prompts. Continuously acquire environmental, IMU, EMF and SDR readings; normalize and aggregate them in custom Python nodes; generate in local ComfyUI; overwrite the temporary image and reuse it as the next source. Separately, the practitioner interprets generated images as spirit communication and updates positive and negative text and image prompts; the cadence of these updates is unspecified. The system was configured to dissolve images into approximately Gaussian noise across iterations. The dissolution mechanism is not represented and no distribution is measured here. No intermediate images were retained. Symbols identify functional roles, not original variable names. 1. Initialize

Use a retained spirit image as I[0], with positive and negative text and image prompts (P+ / P−).

  2. Acquire

Read fresh environmental, IMU, EMF and SDR values: s[n].

  3. Process

Custom Python nodes normalize and aggregate readings into node controls, prompt weights and sensor-derived randomness.

  4. Generate

Local Stable Diffusion in ComfyUI receives the current image, current prompts and sensor inputs to produce I[n+1]. Most major generation values were modulated.

  5. Overwrite / reuse

I[n+1] overwrites the temporary image and becomes the next source. Repeat from acquisition with fresh sensor data and current prompts.

I[n]: image state · s[n]: sensor readings · P+ / P−: positive / negative text and image prompts.

Original invitation → retained image → ongoing propitiation → departure. The computational loop continually rewrites the image; practitioner interpretation supplies prompt updates at an unspecified cadence. Configured dissolution leads to approximately Gaussian noise; its mechanism is not represented.

Ritual preparation — Stochastic Medium Three preparation stages: use astrological timing and sigils; establish a magic circle with the computer inside and play a synthesized voice reciting ritual language and incantations through a speaker; ritually consecrate the computer and pre-fill memory with repeated incantations; connect environmental, IMU, EMF and SDR sensor inputs. Environmental readings include temperature, humidity and air pressure. IMU readings include vibration and tilt. Private ritual details and exact ritual order are not represented. 1. Time + prepare space

Astrological timing, sigils and a magic circle. Position the computer within the circle.

  2. Consecrate computer

Ritually consecrate the machine. Pre-fill memory with repeated incantations; play synthesized ritual language and incantations through a speaker.

  3. Connect sensors

Acquire continuous readings from four groups:

    Environmental
    Temperature, humidity, air pressure
    IMU
    Vibration, tilt
    EMF
    Electromagnetic readings
    SDR
    Radio interference

Memory preparation belongs to the ritual account; no direct connection from the incantations in memory to model conditioning is asserted.

Preparation of the space, machine and sensor inputs. These stages organize the account; the exact ritual sequence, incantations and private actions are withheld.

VOID Catalog - 666 Images, 117 Inspirited

ComfyUI, ritual conditioning, and a slow divinatory selection process

Field notes from generating 666 violet figures locally, then spending weeks deciding which 117 carried enough presence to keep.
